Vatsshelir Cave (Lava Cave)

After less than 45mins drive, we arrive at the Lava Cave. It was rainy (as usual) & after getting our gears (helmet & torchlights) in place, we are off to the ‘centre of the earth’

It was really really dark so one can’t really take any decent pictures. It is meant to be experience & ‘felt’ .  It was not difficult to go down or even back up at all – despite the rocky paths – in fact my 6 year old walked about with us without any trouble at all.
Guides were well very well informed & it is the first time I learn that lava flows underneath our surface earth actually creates caves & tunnels – something that I have never learn during my secondary school days.

After almost an hour out, we completed our tour & off to our next scenic stop

Anarstapi & Gatklettur

Then off we go for a lunch stop. We hunted for the infamous Fjöruhúsið café but alas it was too crowded! And we are in the off peak season! Do note this cafe is located right next to the rocky bay.  They are only opened fm May to October. We are a little disappointed that we couldn’t dine there as they just refused more patrons! We had to settle with a nearby cafe/restaurant. Loads of tourists goes there as well – I guess there really isn’t much options & the food is not something we can ‘rave’ about.

After a not-so-satisfying lunch, we are off to the famous Black Church.

Black Church.

And it is famous just for that – a Black colored church in the middle of nowhere (it seems). It is also actually a very old church – tombstones dated back to a century old.

Next – we drive towards Borganes again – wanting to spend some time in the Ljómalind Farmers Market – and boy ! It was such a dissappointment!  There are only 2 shops that are open & there really not much to see except some winter / warm clothes. No fresh food produce – and to think that we plan for a 2 hour stop here.

Instead – we decide to go to Geira Bakery again for their cakes & bread – we spend a good hour enjoying the coffee & their cakes.

Another famous place in Borganes is the Bjössaróló Park- children playground. It was constructed by Bjorn Gudmundsson, a man who was ahead of his time and thought about recycling. He used exclusively things that had been thrown away to build up this special place.

Bjössaróló Park

I think we had more fun at this park then the ‘farmers’ market of Borganes.

This is our last stop of Snaefells &  off we go to Reykjavik city!
