7 ladies & a girl in Iceland : South Iceland

When: May 23, 2017  Where: Vik,Dyrhólaey Arch, Jokulsarlon, Diamond Beach.

Weather: Sunny in the morning, drizzling then cloudy.   Temperature: 7°C  Feels like: 3°C

Drive Route: HELLA>Dyrholaey>Vik>Jokulsarlon>Diamond Beach>Fosshotel

After a good morning run around the Hella Farmhouse & scaring the residents farm sheeps and their oh-so-cute lambs, we are ready for our main attraction of the day – towards the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon.

Views along our 1Hr30mins ride to Dyrholaey

Views along route 1- bjedvegur

We couldn’t stop ourselves when we saw a beautiful & never ending grassland (which is own by a farmer I am sure) behind the backdrop of huge mountains.

Dyrhólaey Arch

After many views / picture stops along the way we arrive at Dyrhólaey Arch. We were not able to get to the west side of the arch view point which is on a higher ground as we were not driving a 4 wheel drive car. We could only view it from the east side which is also beautiful as we get to see the furthest part of Reynisfjara (black beach). It was very windy & cold (as you can see from the way we dress from the picture)

As it will be a long drive from Vik to Jokulsarlon, we had a quick sandwich lunch which we prepared in the morning.

With the snow cap mountain in sight – we are pretty sure we are going the right direction

We reached Jokulsarlon Glacier lagoon at about 3:15pm. It was drizzling (again).  There are 2 options for local boat tour . The more adventurous one – using a bum boat & the touristy one – a bigger boat with wheels. The adventurous one need a reservation & takes about an hour while the big touristy one does not need a reservation (but we are in May not in the summer busy season yet). We managed to get tix for the 4.40pm one so we decide to go over to the Diamond beach first which is just across the lagoon.

Diamond Beach

I have no words to describe the place. I would think this may be the only place in the world with the blocks of ice lying on a black colored beach.

Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon

No needs for words, just pictures here.

Lagoon is getting bigger due to the global warming. This used to be only glaciers but because of the melting glaciers, it became a lagoon of ice & water. While the beauty is amazing, I do feel a bit sad that we are actually ‘enjoying’ beauty at the cost of our environment.

Well.. that is that, I will do what I can do to do less damage & hopefully the mother nature will have a way to fix herself somehow.

At almost 6pm, we are all ready to get to our stay for the night – Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon. Approximate 20mins drive away from the lagoon. The location of the hotel is superb with the mountain background & their very own natural waterfall at the back!

The hotel’s restaurant serve very good food. There isn’t much choices of restaurant around the area – so if you want a good meal- just eat there. Price range between ISK4000-5000.
