Local sights : Desaru Fruit Farm

It is the long weekend holiday and we decide to head to our favourite beach in JB (It’s not like there are many beaches around that’s less than 1 hour away actually).

Stayed at the Pulai Desaru Resort. The resort has a pretty nice pool and slide so it works for us. Their beach side are kept clean so that is a plus. Except that it seems that the nearby Pengerang RAPID development has begun to pollute the area with black oil as my feet caught some :- (

Anyway, we decided to check out the desaru fruit farm. Just 15 mins ride from the hotel and you will reach the place.

Entrance fee is RM25 for adults and RM20 for 3-11 yo. We caught the 2pm tour and they have this makeshift lorry with stairs and seats so they could ferry us to the farm.

A guide gives some simple introduction to the local fruit trees like the papayas, bananas, mulberry, breadfruit, cocoa, passionfruit and dragonfruit.
Her first encounter of a cocoa – in its original form.

After a 30min walk about the fruit trees, a herb area, ginger plants and a small pond full of kois, one can buy fruit drinks like the dragonfruit juice, guava or passionfruit. They tastes authentic so worth the Rm3 cos there’s no syrup added just plain old fruit juice.

Great place to reminiscence old games like the hop scotch. Got to introduce Relm this simple game that I believe build children’s mobility skills.

And they got a mini zoo to keep the kids a little more entertained (cos after a 20 mins walk through the trees, they do get a little bored). The mini zoo has ducks, geese, pheasants, 2 pythons, turkeys, chickens, rabbits and goats. And yes goats and rabbits are the star of the mini zoo.

After 1 hour, we complete the tour. And each of us were given a box of cut fruits from the farm.

I enjoyed the fruits. They are not all sweet so I am pretty sure they are not artificially sweetened like the many stories we heard.

It was a very hot day and after the tour, we went back to the hotel.and jump right back to the pool!

Would I recommend anyone to go? I would say yes for urban kids as it’s a good place for a quick introduction to the tropical fruits trees and able to come up close, touching and feeling them is a good experience. That said, I wouldn’t go a 2nd time as the farm need to make some serious change to make it more than it is. I am seriously surprised it is called agrotourism and with so many awards. I think Malaysians can really come up with better concept than this one.
The place has potential but not enough to draw people to keep coming back.
